Hawai`i’s year-round warm climate makes it an outdoor paradise. No wonder then that Honolulu is home to the largest open-air shopping mall in the world, the fabulous Ala Moana Center. No ordinary mall, this tastefully designed shopping opus (a “shoppus”?) has to be seen to be believed!
Shop ‘Til You Drop at Ala Moana Center
Located in the heart of Honolulu just steps from Ala Moana Beach Park and mere blocks from Waikiki, Ala Moana Hawaii is a 25-mile drive from your lodgings at Beach Villas Hawai`i. You can pop in for souvenirs and a quick bite, or make a day of it exploring the tiered shopping levels, dining options, and rotating roster of shows and concerts.
There are over 350 stores plus dozens of specialty kiosks, ranging from discount stores to convenience marts to high-end boutiques. The mall is anchored by 7 large department stores (Macy’s, Target, Nordstrom’s, Saks 5th Avenue, Ross, Bloomingdale’s, and Neiman Marcus) for all your shopping needs, from haute couture to electronics. There is even an organic grocery store. Throughout the mall, its open walkways and naturally landscaped, open-air corridors and terraces make shopping a breeze.
Food, Food, Food!
With over 100 food options, there is something for everyone and every appetite. Fine sit-down restaurants offering gourmet meals from world-class chefs will dazzle your taste buds (Vintage Cave and Vintage Cave Cafe, Mariposa, Morton’s The Steakhouse). Lively and delicious national chains abound on the Ho`okipa Terrace, situated atop the mall (California Pizza Kitchen, Islands Burgers, and Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. Newer). Or you can try the flavors of Asia at any of the scrumptious noodle shops. The newest addition to the mall’s food scene, The Brilliant Ox, promises to be paradise for the gastropub enthusiast. Last but not least, if you have no idea what you want but you are in the mood for exotic foods and cheap beer, we highly recommend the Shirokiya Japanese Village Walk, home to more than 2 dozen food stands and a popular beer and sake garden with $4 pitchers!
More Than a Mall
Ala Moana Hawaii is more than just stores (and there are plenty of amazing stores). For adults and kids alike, Lucky Strike Social features arcade games, pub food, and bowling lanes. Elsewhere, there are play areas for those with younger children. Of course, if at any time you need a break from shopping, grab a coffee (Starbucks, Island Brew Coffeehouse, Honolulu Coffee Co., and more), a juice, or a gelato and check out the cultural goings-on. It is always worth stopping by the Centerstage amphitheater, home to nightly Hawaiian music as well as hula shows and special events.
Ala Moana Center is THE shopping destination on O`ahu, but as you can see, it offers much more than shopping. Centrally located and boasting ample parking, it is well worth a visit, even if you are just picking up a bento (box lunch) and heading across the street to the warm sand and waters of Ala Moana Beach Park. Be sure to save us a bite!
