Mokulua

Pushing off from shore, you enter crystal clear waters, leaving the white sand of Kailua Beach behind you and paddling toward the enticing islands that are just 2.5 miles offshore. If the winds and waves are gentle, you paddle for about 45 minutes through the aqua blue ocean before reaching a beach on the tiny island of Moku Nui. If the waves and wind are not in your favor that day, it may take up to two hours of vigorous paddling. Either way, you arrive at a beautiful white sand beach prepared to relax and soak in the views. The Islands

The two islands spotted offshore from Lanikai Beach and Kailua Beach are known as Na Mokulua, which translates from Hawaiian as “the two islands”. They’re commonly referred to as “The Mokes”. Part of the Hawaii State Seabird Sanctuary, Moku Iki, the smaller island on the right, is a nesting location for thousands of Wedge-tailed Shearwaters. The larger island on the left, which is still only 1,000 feet by 800 feet, is known as Moku Nui and has a sandy beach on the west side that is open during the day – the perfect kayak destination. You may want to bring along your snorkeling gear to spot green sea turtles (honu), tropical fish, and underwater lava formations. Locals also surf the breaks alongside Moku Nui, as well as spearfish. In season, you may even spot whales and dolphins during your paddle.

Kayaking

If you’re ready to venture to Na Mokulua on your own, kayaks can be rented at Kailua Sailboards & Kayaks, just across from Kailua Beach. This is recommended only for experienced kayakers, as the waves and currents can make navigating the 2.5 miles more difficult than it may appear. If you’re not completely confident in your kayaking abilities, don’t let this deter you – guided tours are also available. A guided tour will give you the assistance and expertise you need to make it to your destination safely and fully enjoy the adventure along the way!
