The Cromwell Pool

Bring a floaty to lay back and relax in the aqua blue waters of nature’s infinity pool at this popular east coast swimming locale. Formerly an old boat harbor, the rock walls at Cromwell Beach form barriers between which has become known as Cromwell’s Rock Pool. During low tide, this can be a great spot for swimming and splashing around with friends.

Best for Sunrise, Swimming, & Surfing

With its east shore location, this is a great spot to catch the sun as it slowly peeks over the horizon, spreading gold, pink, and purple hues across the darkened morning sky. The best timing for this beach is low tide, when there is plenty of sand exposed and a variety of tide pools to explore. High tide can cause the beach to completely disappear beneath the waves. Experienced surfers can paddle out past the reef to catch the swell.

These breakwaters were originally constructed in 1938 as a boat harbor just below the Doris Duke Estate in Kahala. Today it is the Doris Duke Foundation for Islamic Art, or Shangri La. While in the past this has been a popular spot for jumping from the lava rock wall into the ocean below, there were several serious injuries here resulting in the construction of a six foot fence along the wall to discourage jumping. Although you’re no longer able to freely jump from the sea wall, there is still access to the pathway and pool.

Location

Just six miles from the bustling city of Honolulu, this is a city-dweller’s hidden gem. Cromwell Beach is located in a residential neighborhood just east of Diamond Head. You will need to park along the street and find the public access point at the end of Kulamanu Street.

Nearby Attractions

While you’re in the neighborhood, head to Diamond Head State Monument and hike up the trail that takes you to the edge of a 300,000-year-old crater. Relatively short in distance but requiring a bit of stair-climbing, don’t underestimate this hike’s difficulty. The sights are well worth the climb, with sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean and Honolulu.
