Malaekahana Beach is a long stretch of white sand on Oahu’s northeastern shore. With its location more remote from the island’s most popular attractions, this beach doesn’t see as many tourists as other Oahu beaches. With the right timing, you may luck out on a weekday and get this beautiful expanse of sand to yourself.
Locals flock to Malaekahana Beach Oahu for surfing and bodyboarding, especially in winter when the swell is up. The swimming conditions are also good here, although rocky in some spots. Just offshore from the beach lies Goat Island, also known as Mokuauia Island. Despite the name, the only wildlife you’ll find on Goat Island is seabirds, for which the island is a sanctuary. Visitors can explore the island’s three beaches, but should not venture inland where the seabirds nest and lay eggs. The best beach for swimming is located along the left side, quickly becoming visible as you paddle out. The island is close enough to shore that it can be reached by swimming or paddling a surfboard. Caution should be used, as tides and currents can change quickly.
Malaekahana Beach is located on Oahu’s northeastern coast between the towns of La’ie and Kahuku.
