Located on Oahu’s sunny North Shore, Waimea Beach Oahu is most popularly known for its huge winter swell. With waves reaching 10-30 feet, this location is a magnet for highly experienced and professional surfers. If you don’t fit that description, a visit to Waimea Beach can still be a great experience in winter, albeit not for swimming. Watching surfers conquer the monster waves from shore gives spectators a strong appreciation for the sport. If the waves reach a minimum of 20 feet, an “Eddie Would Go” surfing contest is held in the bay between Dec 1 and Feb 28 in honor of the late competitive surfer and lifeguard Eddie Aikau.
During summer months, Waimea Beach transforms into a tranquil bay perfect for families. It’s a favorite location for locals and visitors to enjoy long days of swimming and lounging on the golden sand. A large, partially submerged rock situated at the left end of the beach is a popular jumping spot. Despite the warning signs, here you will find throngs of people scrambling up the slippery rock to jump 30 feet into the aquamarine ocean below. Sea turtles and tropical fish can often be seen around the rock. Don a snorkel and fins to explore the underwater world in this area, including the tunnels that run beneath the cliff.
